The most contentious subject in college sports the last few years is the transfer portal.
While the option for athletes to transfer to different schools has been around for a long time, the ease has increased exponentially. And thus, so has the frequency.
There are two main factors that have contributed to the impact of the transfer portal in college sports: the NCAA granting extra year(s) of eligibility due to COVID and the expansion of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rights.
While second- and third-tier sports are less affected than football and basketball, there is still a massive ripple effect taking place.
