After feeling each other out in the first half, Darien kicked the tempo up on Staples with a four-goal run in just over two minutes to start the second half of Saturday's Class LL championship game at Fairfield University.
But the end of that run was also the end of Darien's scoring for the game.
Staples goalie Josh Marcus and the Wreckers' close defense slammed the door shut, while Adam Udell and Tristan Schaefer each had tricks to deliver a 7-6 state title win to Staples.
It is the third state title in the last four years for the third-seeded Wreckers, who had dispatched No. 2 Ridgefield in the semifinals.
