Podcast: One Percent founder Matt Chandik on social media, running events

One Percent Showcase co-founder Matt Chandik is this week's guest on the "Chasing The Goal" podcast.

On this episode of the “Chasing The Goal” podcast, hosts Kyle Devitte and Owen Hart are joined by Dynamic Sports Management communications director and One Percent Showcase co-founder Matt Chandik. 

Chandik has enjoyed a unique career path. He started as a hockey coach at Strath Haven High School in Wallingford, Pa., and transitioned into writing about lacrosse through a local paper. That led to a stint as the digital content and social media manager at NXT.

In 2018, he joined the Dynamic Sports Management team as a communications director, working towards a similar role that he had at NXT, while also working on social media for the National Lacrosse Federation, a conglomerate of high-ranked club teams that includes Laxachusetts.

He also co-founded the One Percent Showcase in October of 2020, which finished its most recent fall event series in mid-October.

Here are some excerpts from the pod.

Kyle Devitte: What’s your follow-up to someone saying, “Check out this clip”? Is it them trying to get you to hire them? What’s the context when that happens to you?

Matt Chandik: It might be a cool play, but if it doesn’t look good, it’s not gonna play well and so forth. You might have scored the sickest goal, but unless you had a B-roll guy there with the game film, it’s gonna be tough to really play well on social. Congrats on your sick goal, but I’m not gonna collab with this. People will send me stuff to NLF all the time, and ask, “Hey, will you collab with this?” No, this is not what we’re looking to portray.

Obviously, as you guys know, you’re running a brand basically on social, right? So you’re controlling the image of everything that goes out. And I’ve had people be like, “Why don’t you just accept everything?” God, no, we don’t want to do that. It dilutes the quality of what you’re doing. … At the end of the day, you are the one controlling that brand in terms of what you want out there. And if it doesn’t look good, it’s not gonna really play well.

KD: I’m curious how you’ve seen the growth pattern work in the companies that you’ve worked for and what their growth looks like. Is it scaling up or scaling down? Where do you think we are headed?

MC: I think the path that you see now, everybody’s getting involved in everything, right? I’m a media guy and I have my own event, and there are guys with extensive playing experience who are running companies. … It’s just like, how can you best present what you have to offer to everybody else? I think the events aren’t going anywhere. There are more kids playing lacrosse and more kids wanting to play at a high level, and they want to play against teams from all over the country.

So I think you’re gonna have more and more events, and a very competitive landscape. I think the more media you present, the more attention you’re gonna get. And, to your point, Kyle, you’ve got to post every day. You have got to put consistent content out showing why your event or whatever it is that you’re running is gonna set itself apart from everybody else. It used to just be like, “Here are the players that are coming.”
