The first half of the RIIL Division 2 title match between top-seeded East Greenwich and No. 3 Portsmouth was a see-saw battle, with each team going on four-goal runs.
Ultimately, it was Portsmouth that ran away with the contest – and the program’s first state title – with a 15-6 victory.
Portsmouth moved into Division 2 after playing at the Division 1 level previously. The squad had a singular goal all season long – to win the state title in its new division.
To accomplish the final task, Portsmouth coach Charlie Willauer came up with a winning strategy to counter the talented East Greenwich offense.
