FOXBORO, Mass. — Cornell rode attackman CJ Kirst's six-goal day to its first championship -- in any sport -- since 1977, as it downed Maryland, 13-10, in front of 32,512 fans at Gillette Stadium on Monday.
Kirst was not the only star for the top-seeded Big Red, as attackman Ryan Goldstein added four goals and netminder Wyatt Knust made 12 stops in net.
Second-seeded Maryland may not have been the better seed, but after a semifinal win over Syracuse, most pundits backed the Terps. But favorites, like hearts, are emotional constructs. The Big Red (18-1) won the NCAA title the same way they won all year -- by being relentless on both sides of the ball.
