At one point during Thayer game last season, head coach Billy Daye turned to the sidelines. He saw seven players he considered key contributors, all injured and unavailable to play.
Daye said he learns something new about coaching every year, but in 2025, the lesson he learned was how important it was to have good depth.
“Prepping the younger guys … and being on the same page, making sure it’s not JV and varsity; it’s all one program,” Daye said. “It’s not something you expect until you go through it.”
In his fourth season as the head coach at Thayer, Daye is committed to growing the program. The middle school team has 36 kids signed up to play this spring. There are 60 on the high school tryout list, up by a third compared to his first year.
