Throughout the season, Somers High School coach George Colton talked with his players about reaching the state championship game. As the season progressed, it became more and more of a reality, which only motivated them more.
For the first time in program history, the Spartans won the state championship, beating top-seeded Lauralton Hall in the CIAC Class S championship game, 11-10, earlier this month.
“It is absolutely amazing to win the program’s first-ever championship,” Colton said. “I have been coaching at Somers for seven years, and my goal was to build a program that would be able to compete for a state championship.
“Over these seven years, we worked on consistency with great coaches and building a winning culture. Every season, we have improved as a program, and our team has bought into our system.”
