Launching a Division 1 college lacrosse program takes a unique combination of leadership qualities from its coach. Thorr Bjorn, the athletic director at the University of Rhode Island, stated that he wanted a leader “with the ability to be patiently aggressive.”
He chose Jenna Slowey.
Slowey served as an assistant coach at Richmond from 2017-21, then spent 2021-22 at Notre Dame as an offensive coordinator and draw coordinator. Under her leadership, the Fighting Irish ranked 20th nationally in scoring offense.
After that, she took over as head of the blooming URI women’s lacrosse program, which was announced as the university’s 19th varsity sport in December 2021, and immediately began building her future roster by recruiting both incoming freshmen and eligible transfer students.
