Ethan Abdella (Needham, Mass.) was just like every other top prospect in New England on Sept. 1.
Abdella — a standout defensive midfielder at St. Sebastian’s — became eligible to commit to a Division 1 college lacrosse program last fall with the rest of the ‘27s.
The excitement and anticipation on that first contact date are real, as the possibility of realizing one’s dream of becoming a Division 1 lacrosse player is closer than ever.
Schools like Boston University, Harvard and Holy Cross were among the schools that reached out to Abdella. Just a few weeks later, he received an offer — and committed — to BU.
Not only was Abdella eager to compete in the competitive Patriot League, but he was hopeful that BU’s pre-medical pathways would support his dream of becoming a doctor.
But as he understood the reality of what being a Division 1 athlete would look like, there was some uncertainty surrounding where his academic goals would fit.
“The more and more unlikely it sounded that going pre-med and being a Division 1 lacrosse player at a large research institution like BU, how hard that would be,” Abdella said.
