As an annual award, CT Player of the Year is always going to be hotly contested. There will be top-level Division 1 signees and All-Americans who don’t win it.
Tim Shannehan was a senior at Class LL champion Fairfield Prep last year who went on to be the Rookie of the Year in the Patriot League playing for Boston University. He didn’t win CT Player of the Year.
Neither did Matt Jeffery of Cheshire, the top recruit in the nation who won ACC Freshman of the Year at Notre Dame this spring. The winner was Kyle Colsey of Ridgefield, who missed his freshman year at UVA due to injury but looked like he’d be a starter. That’s the caliber of talent up for this award.
This year, there’s a handful of players worth examining. And, while it frequently goes to offensive players, there are some defenders in the mix this year who could buck the trend.
