The pecking order in Connecticut continues to be anyone’s guess. There’s a group of teams that includes Fairfield Prep, New Canaan, Darien, Staples, Ridgefield and a few from outside the FCIAC (more on this in a bit) that all look like they have what it takes to wear the crown this year.
The headline game of the week was the annual public vs. private battle of Darien vs. Brunswick, which has delivered excitement and electric results in recent years. Darien stood up well early, but the constant pressure from Brunswick overwhelmed the Blue Wave as the game went on. Darien played a lot of zone defense, forcing shots from distance that goalie George Persinger saved consistently.
But Aidan Diaz-Matos had a perfect 20-of-20 day facing off for Brunswick, and Darien could not clear consistently against a Brunswick 10-man ride led by its hyper athletic and aggressive attack group. The final was 12-7.
The rest of the state delivered plenty of action, too. Here are the teams, players and games to watch.
